Early 19th Century Secretary Cabinet

$3,985.00

The third and final secretary desk from the Ansley family collection was crafted in the early 19th century (c. 1820–1840), during the transition from the Federal to early Empire period, a time when the young United States was finding its own design voice. This is in many ways a matching mate to the previous secretary featured aside from a few trim details and drawer pulls. It features clean, architectural lines, a bold stepped cornice, hand-cut dovetails, and a combination of pine, walnut, and flame mahogany veneer that speaks to the materials favored by early American cabinetmakers. The interior still retains its original green baize writing surface, a rare survivor that connects us directly to the hands that wrote letters here almost 200 years ago.

This piece wears its age with grace in a mellow patina, surface marks, and slight irregularities that can only be earned through generations of use. It remains fully functional and ready to serve its next caretaker.

As always, this piece will be professionally detailed and cleaned upon delivery to its new steward. Restoration services are available if desired, but we believe these pieces are at their highest value in their original, time honored condition.
