This solid cherry slant-front secretary was made close by in Columbia, Tennessee by the now closed Columbia Cabinet Company. A small but highly respected shop known for making high-quality reproductions of America’s most beloved furniture styles. I believe this one dates to the 1940s or 50s, and it’s a beautiful example of their work.

The design itself goes back much further. Slant-front desks first became popular in the late 1700s and early 1800s, when American cabinetmakers took inspiration from European escritoire writing desks, aka secretary desks, and gave them a cleaner, lighter look to suit Federal and early Classical interiors. The fold down front gave you a private workspace you could tuck away, and the upper cabinet, shown here with its pair of hinged doors and stationary shelves, kept books, ledgers, or treasured keepsakes within reach.

Every part of this piece shows the kind of craftsmanship you just don’t find today. It’s made from solid slab cherry, not a veneer in sight. The boards were chosen for their grain and color, the joinery was cut and fit by hand, and the finish was built to bring out the natural warmth of the wood. It’s sturdy, practical, and still every bit as handsome as the day it left the shop.

Pieces like this are getting harder and harder to come by, especially in all solid cherry. Whether you use it as a working desk, an accent piece, or both, it’s the kind of furniture that quietly tells its story in any room you put it in.
