Dating to around 1915, this matching pair of French bedside commodes reflects the Louis XVI style with slender tapered legs, mahogany veneer, fine string inlay, gilt metal mounts and inset white marble tops. Each cabinet features a single upper drawer with a paneled door below.
More than simply two coordinating cabinets, these were intentionally constructed as a true bedside pair. Their doors are hinged on opposite sides, allowing one commode to stand to the right of the bed and the other to the left, with each door opening conveniently away from the bedside.
Known in France as tables de nuit or tables de chevet, these were predecessors to the modern nightstand. The lower cabinets retain white enameled interiors, which were designed to house removable chamber pots. A small opening at the back provided ventilation, while the washable lining protected the surrounding wood and made the compartment easier to keep clean.
Although their original sanitary purpose is no longer needed, the pair remains fully functional as bedside tables or small accent cabinets. Both are presented in original antique condition with wear to the wood, marble, and interiors consistent with their age.
