Dating to the middle of the 19th century, this French rosewood bijouterie table was designed to both display and securely store a collection of treasured objects. An early handwritten provenance label preserved beneath the table records that it was brought from France in 1848.
The French word bijouterie refers to jewelry or small precious objects, and tables of this form were created specifically for their display and safekeeping. The hinged glass top lifts to reveal a deep red velvet-lined display compartment, allowing jewelry, small works of art, curiosities, or other prized possessions to remain visible beneath the glass. Three separate locks secure the display compartment and the two drawers below, an important detail for a piece originally intended to hold objects of value.
The table is constructed in rosewood and is supported by four beautifully turned barley-twist legs joined by matching stretchers and a central turned finial. Fine carved moldings frame the drawers and glass top, while the rich wood and deep red velvet give the piece the luxurious character associated with French furniture of the period.
More than 175 years later, this bijouterie table remains wonderfully functional for its original purpose, offering a beautiful way to display jewelry, antique silver, small historical objects, or any collection worthy of being seen.
