Dating to circa 1895 to 1910, this Chippendale Revival block front secretary desk is constructed in mahogany and represents an exceptional variation of a turn of the century workshop design. Its custom details include multiwood marquetry with North Wind mascarons, bird’s eye maple drawer linings, mother of pearl ornamentation, and brass stringing throughout the fitted interior with operable locks and key.
The fall front opens to provide a practical writing surface with document compartments, small drawers, and a central prospect door. Concealed supports automatically engage as the fall is lowered using a mechanism patented by James B. Pooley on April 5, 1887.
The desk remains in antique condition with wear and minor imperfections consistent with more than a century of use. It is structurally sound, fully functioning, and retains the character expected of a finely made turn of the century piece.
