Antique Victorian Eastlake Cylinder Secretary Cabinet

$2,900.00

At first glance, you may think this is a regular roll top desk, but this is a true cylinder desk, which is a completely different level of craftsmanship. Instead of the typical slatted tambour that slides back, this has a solid curved panel that lifts and rolls smoothly into place. That detail alone tells you this was never meant to be a basic piece.

This example dates to the late 1800s, right in that transition period where Victorian design started to simplify into more geometric, refined forms. You can see the Eastlake influence in the clean lines and subtle incised details, but it avoids the heavy, overworked carving that earlier pieces often had.

It’s made primarily of walnut and features bookmatched walnut burl veneer across the drawer fronts and cylinder panel, which gives it that feathered, almost flame like movement in the grain. It’s one of those details that becomes more noticeable the longer you look at it.

The upper cabinet still retains its original wavy glass, which is always something we hope to find but rarely do in this condition. Inside, you have the original pigeonhole layout with small drawers, along with visible staining from where inkwells once sat, a small detail that ties it directly back to how it was actually used.

These desks were designed to do everything in one footprint. Storage, workspace, and display all combined into a single piece, which is why they became so popular in late 19th century homes and offices.

What really sets this one apart is the condition. It retains its original finish and has been exceptionally well preserved over time. The color, the depth, and the surface all reflect just how well this piece has been cared for. While each door and drawer has it's original lock, a working key is only present for the cylinder door.
