This table traces its roots back to late 18th century candlestands, originally designed as small pedestal tables that could tilt upright when not in use. By the early 19th century, these forms evolved into multi purpose tables for cards and casual dining, often associated with the refined proportions popularized by Duncan Phyfe. The example here is dating to 1948, when American furniture makers revisited early Federal designs and adapted them for modern living. Features like the rotating flip top and integrated storage made these tables especially practical in smaller homes, allowing one piece to serve multiple functions while maintaining a classical silhouette.
