Dating to the 18th century, this Italian provincial mule chest is hand crafted from solid walnut and reflects the design language of the Italian Renaissance. The deeply carved front features winged griffins flanking a central oval cartouche, along with scrolling foliage. A carved fan motif decorates the lift top, which opens to reveal a divided interior above two functioning drawers.
The mule chest form combines lift top storage with drawers below. Wide back planks, square nail construction, and a hand cut shaped bracket base reflect early construction methods. It retains its original finish with patina and wear consistent with age and remains structurally sound and functional for today’s home.
