Antique French Louis Phillippe Mirrored Sofa Set
An extraordinary mirrored pair of French Louis Philippe sofas dating to the mid-19th century, retaining their original French tapestry upholstery and beautifully carved mahogany frames. Designed as a reverse pair, each sofa was intentionally crafted as the mirror image of the other, allowing them to be displayed together in a formal conversation setting or used individually throughout the home. Finding an original pair that has remained together is exceptionally uncommon.
One of the sofas still retains its original tag from the 1926 Louis Philippe Exposition held in Paris. Based on our research, the pair was subsequently acquired for the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, where they remained for nearly the next century. Provenance traces the sofas to a Waldorf Astoria auction, with research indicating they were used in either the Duke and Duchess Suite or the Winston Churchill Suite.
The original woven French tapestry upholstery remains intact, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship and artistry that defined the Louis Philippe period. The tapestries are beautifully preserved with age-appropriate wear consistent with nearly two centuries of history. The original spring set remains intact and functional, offering the supportive feel characteristic of 19th century upholstered furniture. Unlike modern overstuffed seating, these sofas were designed with a firmer, more tailored profile that reflects the craftsmanship and aesthetic of their period. While they remain fully functional and suitable for everyday enjoyment, they should be appreciated and cared for as exceptional antiques with remarkable provenance. Prior to delivery, they will receive a thorough professional detailing along with light cosmetic touch-ups where appropriate to ensure they are presented at their very best while preserving their originality.
