19th Century Sheraton Chest of Drawers

$1,450.00

As I’ve often said, early American furniture can be incredibly difficult to narrow down to one exact style or even an exact decade because American cabinetmakers were pulling influence from so many places at once. Sheraton, Federal, Classical, and regional craftsmanship all heavily overlapped during the early 19th century, especially outside of major metropolitan areas. But with that said, I do feel confident calling this an American Sheraton influenced chest dating to the first quarter of the 19th century.

What immediately stands out to me about this piece is how distinctly American it feels in its proportions and details. The mahogany veneer over pine secondary wood construction, the bold spiral turned columns, and especially that scrolling upper gallery all feel less formal and architectural than many New England examples from the same period. Personally, I believe this piece likely originated somewhere in the South or Mid Atlantic region where cabinetmakers often leaned into slightly bolder and more expressive interpretations of these earlier forms.

And then there are those unusual textured turnings flanking the upper drawers, easily one of my favorite details on the piece. Decorative turnings like these became a way for cabinetmakers to showcase craftsmanship during the early 19th century, adding depth and visual texture without relying on excessive carving or ornamentation. Combined with the warmth and movement throughout the mahogany veneer, it gives this chest a presence that feels refined while still remaining approachable and distinctly American.

This piece remains structurally sound and fully functional while still retaining the authentic signs of age, wear, and character you would hope to see from a true early 19th century piece. A life well lived is still written throughout the surface, and personally, I think that history only adds to its charm.
