This Italian Savonarola game set is a revival of one of the most recognizable furniture forms of the Renaissance.
The chair form dates back to 15th and 16th century Italy, inspired by the much older Roman curule chair, a folding seat once used by officials and military leaders. By the Renaissance, it evolved into what we now call the Savonarola chair, known for its dramatic curved slats, sculptural silhouette, and ability to collapse for storage. It was furniture designed to be both functional and impressive, and centuries later, it still does exactly that.
This particular set was purchased in Italy in 1966 by an American serviceman while stationed overseas and was brought back to the States, where it remained in the same Georgia estate until now. The table and chairs are original to the set and remain structurally solid and in excellent condition.
The original chess pieces were damaged during the move home and later replaced through an insurance claim with authentic Italian pieces, special ordered from Italy in 2002.
I can give you a very educated estimate, but I don’t want to pretend I can give exact dimensions from a photo. These Italian Savonarola game sets were made in several sizes, and even reproductions vary.
I found multiple comparable sets, and the dimensions are remarkably consistent:
Most tables fall around 24 to 25 inches square and 29 to 31 inches tall.
Based on your exact style and proportions, I’d estimate yours at:
Table: 26 x 26 x 29h
Chairs: 24w x 22d x 32h
